my mp3 player

amid all the hysteria surrounding file sharing and mp3 licensing, i have gone out and bought me an mp3 player. i went to my favourite local bigbox warehouse store, costco, to buy some other things when this one caught my eye. i had wanted to buy one for awhile now and had my eye on an ipod shuffle. i knew what kind of features i wanted but never really put that much effort into looking for one and then going to the store to check it out thinking that one that i like might magically appear before me. it did, kinda. i bought the sanyo dmc300. it has 512mb of built-in flash memory (of which, 16mb is taken up by the system leaving you with 496mb), fm tuner, voice and fm recorder and an sd/mm expansion slot for more memory. this last feature was something that i was looking for as i already own sd memory cards for my digital & mini-dv cameras and have an sd reader built-in to my notebook. i have already filled the entire memory with 96 mp3 songs at 192kb sampling. i probably could get 30 or 40 more songs if i had used 128kb sampling but regular mp3 is not a great compression method for sound quality. hopefully sanyo will release a firmware update for an ogg vorbis [wikipedia:home page] decoder! that way, i won't ever have to worry about mp3 licensing because it's open source.

***UPDATE***

i have been asked by 2 people so far about the sanyo dmc300. so i will oblige and share some more useful information about this particular mp3 player.

all-in-all, this unit is pretty easy to use, as are most mp3 players. the design is simple and esthetically pleasing and the blue back-lit lcd screen is large enough to display all the necessary information that you could want to know about the songs that's currently playing. you can adjust contrast and battery saver settings for the screen. as mentioned above, the expandability of the memory is one of the selling features that i truly wanted and a built-in fm tuner with lots of station presets was a real bonus. the voice recording feature is pretty convenient if you want to record some notes, comments or even interviews. the recording is in mono but can be adjusted for the quality of sound and type of compression (better quality=bigger file size=less recording time). there is no voice activated recording but can be paused and then continued on the same file. if you press 'stop', the next time you will start a new file. the documentation seems to indicate that the unit can record fm transmissions but have yet to figure out how to do so. there are also other features such as the ability to scroll lyrics across the screen, change preset equalizer settings, random/repeat and others. the player comes with a quick start guide, ear phones, usb adapter and cd-rom (win98 drivers and additional documentation).

the unit is not without its problems though. for one thing, the buttons are finnicky. you must press & hold the stop button for a few seconds to turn it off but sometimes it fails even though it feels like you are pressing the button. coupled with this problem is that it sometimes fails to remember the last track that was playing (returns to track 1) and compounding the problem, the shuffle algorithm is not really random meaning that it seems the "shuffled" track order is always the same. i also thought the battery indicator wasn't as accurate as it could be. the battery life is good however at about 8-10 hours of use but the indicator still showed power when it cuts out. on my particular unit, it seemed that the fm tuner was not functioning. i reflashed the firmware and that seemed to clear up the problem for me. but all these negatives for an mp3 player that costs $120 shouldn't stop you from getting this unit because it truly is a great deal!

Oh wow, how tiny is that! It's looking pretty good, have you decided what your first songs are going to be?

lh: actually, i already have filled it! ok, i can't list all 96 songs, but these are the artists that are in: pavement, flaming lips, nirvana, beastie boys uh, that's it. ok, ok, quite contemporary and somewhat pop, you might say. but each is genius in their own right.

I like's that ALOT!... I want to get one too. Just overwhelmed with all the options that are out there. I think that is a wonderful investment. It's cute too. I hope you put some Phil Collins in there. Nothing like "In the Air Of The Night" pumping thru headphones... especially if you are going the comtemporary pop route.

jj: that's got to be one of the best driving songs ever! wonder what the miami vice movie is going to be like?? do you remember when he was actually in the show? well, too much phil collins can be boring for me as it seems formulaic (i prefer older genesis, myself). but what pop music doesn't seem formulaic and boring to some degree? it also comes from being overplayed; your aural environment being bombarded with & saturated by these "infectious pop hooks" and hearing them hundreds of times over. that's why i cringe whenever i hear a new song on the radio that i might like. it inevitably means that i'm going to be hearing it over & over again for the next month or three.

HAHAHA... I thought I was the only one that connected Miami Vice to Phil Collins! Can't wait to see what they are going to do with the movie. And of course I remember when he was on the show... that episode was eery. But weren't they all?
I know what you mean about the radio thing. That's why I don't listen to the radio often. I hear a song that I like and then I pray that the airplay doesn't ruin it for me. At work the radio is constantly playing, and there was this song by Maroon 5 that I enjoyed.. by the end of the first week... the radio was killing it! I don't even want to think about it.
It's a shame what they do to some songs. I don't understand why radio stations don't play a variety of songs. They act like they only have 23 songs to choose from. If I had a music library I would use and abuse everything!

Do you feel the same way about Sting and the Police as you do with Phil and Genesis?

jj: that's been a dream of mine for awhile: "to own and program my own radio station." i would promote local music and play almost anything. i would also have a rule that says you can't play anything more than once in a 24 hour time period, hahaha!

sting:police vs p.collins:genesis
if anything, it would be sting:police = p.gabriel:genesis
sting is a prolific lyricist who made me realize that lyrics had an important role in music. (kurt cobain made me realize that lyrics are not as important as the feeling the song conveys.) although phil collins is really good at making pop music, peter gabriel is much better at creating true art, much like sting.

Good gracious I couldn't have said it any better! Real impressive. I really love the break down. I feel the exact same way. And I love Peter Gabriel... I was actually listening to "Don't Give Up" last night!!! Weird that you mentioned him. But a beautiful song.

Sweet-ass MP3 player. I've got a new Creative 20 Gig. Works great. I have my entire library on there and it isn't even half full yet.

I've been looking at that MP3 player for a while... how's the quality and ease of use? Any complaints? I can't find any sites that review it, so I'm hoping you can give me an idea...

Hey Lester, what website did you visit to get the firmware. Can't seem to find it on the Sanyo website. BTW, if you had your time back would you buy the DMC-300 again?

i have since exchanged my dmc300 for a new one since i thought i was having trouble with my unit. the fact that i exchanged it for exactly the same one should say a lot for the mp3 player.

to upgrade or re-flash the firmware, you have to install the updater from the cd that was included with the mp3 player.

Shoot...I threw my CD away as I thought the software would be on their website and more up to date. I guess I was wrong.

Does the firmware update fix the issue with the DMC300 not remembering what track you were on and where in the track? I listen to PODCasts and many of them are long and it is a real pain to have to fast forward to the spot you left off at.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have a question as to the order of the songs played (other than shuffle). Is there some kind of playlist feature, or numerical order? Is it like panasonic that you add 001-999 as prefix to the filename and it plays in that order? In short, do you have control on the play order of the songs?

hi marc!

i haven't tried to order the songs in the player's directory but it seems that the song order is NOT alphabetized or in numerical order. when i sync'd the songs on the player, it appeared in the same order as it was displayed on the computer. so it seems that if you want a specific order, you'll have to sync them in that order. hopefully a newer version of the firmware will be released to address some of these issues.

Hey my man, just thought I'd let you know, but did you know that to get the mp3 to actually "shuffle" the songs you have to push stop (just tap it) while it's in shuffle mode? I've got one myself, and that always seems to keep it fairly random.
